The Best Book on Biblical Theology…For Kids

 The Big Picture Story Bible

For you parents wanting to teach your children about biblical theology I would suggest The Big Picture Story Bible, by David Helm.  Helm gives credit to Graeme Goldsworthy for teaching him biblical theology.  Here is an excerpt on how the apostles read the Old Testament after Jesus rose from the dead.

Jesus’ followers were amazed as they listened and read.  Before, they said, “We have seen the Lord!” But now they could read God’s holy book and say, “Even here, especially here, we have seen the Lord!”  Jesus taught them carefully because he knew the day was coming when people would no longer see him with their eyes.  They would read of him instead.  He knew God’s holy book would help others to believe and say, “We have seen the Lord!”  And they too would be full of joy.  Do you see the Lord?  Painted on the pages of Israel’s hard and happy history is the big picture of God’s forever king. (406-411).

Helm’s book is excellent for teaching children what the Bible is really about instead of inundating them with moralistic lessons from Old Testament characters and events.  Gail Schoonmaker does an excellent job with the illustrations that help convey the storyline of Scripture.  I would highly recommend this book for parents, children, or anyone who wants to properly teach children from a Christ-centered perspective.
